Commanding a spectacular elevated position above a small Cretan village and surrounded by orange and olive groves, this old stone house provides spacious accommodation for up to five people. Renovated by English owners who have kept a traditional style throughout, it has two bedrooms, one double and one twin, both with ensuite bathrooms. In the living area there is a traditional Cretan sofa where a fifth person can be accommodated if required. The large farmhouse style kitchen has a wood burning stove as well as the modern conveniences of a television; hi-fi and washing machine. Outside there are terraces on three sides of the house, perfect for enjoying the solitude and marvellous views, and for catching the sun at anytime of day. The small swimming pool has a very secluded position set in one of the terraces, and situated next to the pool is a shady pergola, ideal for lazy lunches and evening barbeques.
Off the beaten track, yet only five kilometres from the north coast and its wealth of beaches, this unspoilt area provides excellent walking, bird watching and sightseeing opportunities, with the White Mountains providing a dramatic backdrop. In addition to the famous Samaria Gorge the shorter and equally beautiful ravines of Agia Irini and Imbros, which will satisfy both the avid and gentle walker, can be easily accessed. The wildlife lake of Agia where egrets, herons and kingfishers are regular visitors is nearby. And, for the children, the Limnoupolis water park is only a fifteen minute drive from the house.
The village of Patelari situated below the house is typical of many small Cretan villages with a tiny school, two or three small churches and life centring round the village square and its kafenion. For those who enjoy a slightly faster pace of life the popular resort of Platanias, where you can find a huge choice of tavernas, cafes, bars and shops, can be reached by car in ten minutes. A further attraction of the area, just fifteen kilometres east of Platanias, is the Venetian harbour town of Chania. Narrow streets, a daily market, a choice of museums and an attractive harbour are just some of its many highlights!
