Between the clear blue Cretan sea and the rolling hills and White Mountains of North West Crete lies Georgioupolis. Tall eucalyptus trees provide a shady welcome as you enter the village and arrive at the long sandy beach that extends for miles to the east.
This attractive village has grown over the years from a sleepy fishing village to a popular little resort where everything is close at hand and easily reached on foot. Its position by the sea, surrounded by undulating hills, ensures the traditional activities of the past, fishing and farming, still continue today. Fishing boats sit picturesquely either side of the mouth of the river between pedaloes that are available for hire for spotting terrapins that live in the freshwater stream! The village square remains a popular meeting point for locals and visitors alike to discuss the day's events in one of the many tavernas and cafes whilst sipping an ouzo or sampling Cretan cuisine.
You couldn't find accommodation much closer to the beach in Georgioupolis than the Mouragio Apartments! Approximately 40 metres from the sea (and less than a three minute walk from the village square) these eight comfortable apartments have been designed with a theme of the sea, (the owner works on the ships that run daily between Crete and Athens). Tasteful blues, occasional porthole windows, pictures depicting mermaids, dolphins and boats and a large anchor at the entrance are just some of the features. The two studios, five one bedroom apartments (sleeping up to four people) and one two bedroom apartment (sleeping up to six people) each have a bathroom with a half bath and a shower attachment, a kitchenette, TV, air-conditioning and either a balcony or a veranda, most with sea views.
The lovely sandy beach makes a great place for spending the day but there is also a large outdoor pool situated approximately 150 metres from the apartments that is open to everyone for the cost of a sun bed (6 euros for two in 2006).
If you want to explore further afield (and there’s plenty to see and do in the area) you can hire a car for a day or two, catch the public bus that heads east to Rethymnon and west to Chania, or explore on foot. For an 'in between' pace, join the Georgioupolis 'road-train' for a trip to the mountain village of Argiroupolis with its natural springs and small waterfalls, a cool shady spot for lunch on a hot summer's day!
Lake Kournas, Crete's only freshwater lake, picturesquely surrounded by the foothills of the White Mountains is just six kms from Georgioupolis. You can swim in the lake, hire a pedalo or, if that all seems far too energetic, just enjoy the vistas from one of the tavernas that line the shore!
