| Descending from the north through the dramatic White Mountains to the southwest coast the scenery is quite breathtaking. As you reach the highest part of the hill, leaving the barren landscape of the high mountains behind you, the meandering road starts to head downhill, passing through a handful of traditional villages before coming to an end at the wide tranquil bay of Sougia.
Despite rises in tourism in recent years Sougia remains pocket sized. The only time you might notice it getting a little busy is when the boat docks at the end of the day, bringing walkers passing on their way from the Samaria Gorge, and at weekends when Chania locals retreat from the city in search of warm seas and good food. It is the perfect place for relaxing and getting back to nature, where you can do as little or as much as you like. With the E4 walking trail following Sougias coastline and the Agia Irini and Samaria Gorges easily accessed from here Sougia makes an ideal base for walkers. The ancient Doric site of Lissos, reached in little more than an hour, following a path that leads through a beautiful echoing gorge, will even appeal to those preferring a more gentle pace! For those who favour other methods of exploring boats run east to Paleochora, west to Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Chora Sfakia and south to the Island of Gavdos. For days in between the wide pebble beach never feels crowded and the beautiful bays of Trypiti and Poililassos, further along the coast, can be reached by water taxi. The Captain George apartments are set just a minute or two from the beach in colourful gardens. The studios can sleep up to two people, with a choice of double or twin beds. Each has a kitchenette, shower room, ceiling fan, air-conditioning and a private balcony. Seven or eight tavernas line the beach so you don't have far to go to find tasty local food, and there are a couple of well-stocked mini markets in the village for any supplies you might need. Whether you want to relax on the beach all day with a good book or explore the south west coast and its hinterland, Sougia offers something for everybody and gives everyone who visits it a taste of the 'real' Crete. |
