| If you are interested in experiencing what genuinely has to be described as the 'real' Crete then Topolia is the place to stay. This traditional village set amidst rolling hills of olive and cypress trees is situated at the top of a lush valley, the views superb in every direction. Just a little way past the village a deep ravine flows through the valley, steep walls climbing high on both sides.
The Topolia Village Houses are positioned down a narrow lane overlooking this lovely valley. Manolis and Yiannis, brothers who were born in the village, have carefully renovated the four houses keeping an original style and character without sacrificing comfort and convenience. Equipped with all mod cons, the houses have air-conditioning, ensuite bathrooms, washing machines, relaxing furnishings and a choice of terraces or balconies. There are four delightful houses to choose from, a one bedroom, a two bedroom, a three bedroom and a four bedroom. The one bedroom house with a double bed has a bathroom, small kitchen, a living room with fireplace and a large patio. The two bedroom house has one double and one twin bedroom, two bathrooms, both ensuite, (one with a jacuzzi bath), making it ideal for two couples or a family. It has a large open plan kitchen/living area with a fireplace and a spacious patio, perfect for enjoying al fresco meals and taking in the wonderful views that stretch far across the valley. The three bedroom house is built on two levels and has a spacious and comfortable open plan living/dining area on the upper level and three bedrooms and two bathrooms, one ensuite and the other with a jacuzzi bath, on the lower level. There are balconies on both levels as well as a roof terrace. The four bedroom house finished last year to the same high standard has the four bedrooms on the lower level, three of which have ensuite bathrooms. Upstairs is the open plan living/dining area. A welcome addition to the four houses, also built last year, is an elevated swimming pool (to ensure you never miss the fantastic views) where you can wile away the day and cool off after exploring this wonderful area. In the early evening enjoy a drink on the pool terrace and delight in the swallows swooping across the pool as the sun sets. The village has a bakery where bread is cooked daily on the premises, a small shop for basic supplies and one taverna offering excellent traditional Greek cooking. Two or three kilometres either side of Topolia there is a choice of other local tavernas. The closest beach can be reached in approximately 10 minutes. The nearest large town, Kissamos, on the north coast can be reached by car in about ten minutes. Here you can find all amenities you might need as well as a good selection of tavernas situated on a pretty little seaside promenade, many offering fresh fish. Two of the highlights of western Crete, the beautiful lagoon of Elafonisi Island, and the splendid beach of Falassarna can be reached in approximately half an hour from the houses. Topolias position, only ten kilometres inland, makes it perfect for exploring the richness and diversity of the countryside as well as the natural beauty of both the north and south coasts. |
