| A quiet little backwater Keratokambos, situated next to the sea on the southeast coast, is a tiny resort that has long been enjoyed by the local market with 'weekenders' coming from Heraklion and Athenians descending in high season. The last few years have also attracted visitors from the European market who have begun to discover and enjoy the tranquillity and real village atmosphere of this place.
Keratokambos is found at the end of a long road that winds down from Ano Viannos, the largest village in the area, through picturesque scenery of pretty hillside villages, whitewashed churches and olive groves. 'Life' in Keratokambos centres around the one 'main' street which lines the long sand and shingle beach where you can find two or three cafes and a handful of tavernas, ensuring you don't need to go far to experience real Cretan cooking at its best. The ‘Stonehouse’ is situated on a hillside just a few minutes west of Keratokambos and one and a half kilometres above the adjoining harbour village of Kastri. Its superb location, perched on the hillside, guarantees splendid sea views as well as a peaceful setting. The house is beautifully designed in a traditional style using natural stone inside and outside, and is equipped with modern furnishings. Positioned on two levels, there is a small but well equipped kitchen and a combined living area on the ground floor, with large arched glass windows and a patio door that leads to a large terrace where you can enjoy uninterrupted sea views. The air-conditioned master bedroom with a double bed (and satellite TV) is also situated on the ground floor, as is the bathroom (with shower and washing machine). Upstairs, above the living area, is the 'gallery room', which offers a spacious second sleeping area with twin beds. The Stonehouse makes a comfortable base for discovering the south east coast, its hinterland villages and its distinctively Cretan pace of life! Take long walks along the coast, swim in the clear water, join the locals in the kafenions to catch up on the events of the day, watch the fishermen come and go or just sit in the shade of the tamarisk trees reading a book, playing backgammon or just gazing across the blue ocean horizon. After a few days in Keratokambos you will discover how easy it is to pass the hours doing just that! |
