The Marialena Houses, situated on the edge of the small Cretan village of Megala Horafia in the Apokoronos region of Western Crete, offer quality accommodation in the most magnificent setting. The nine, individual, detached houses, set amongst lush colourful gardens, sit at the foot of the stunning White Mountains that are the backdrop of this lovely region.
Of course such a superb location doesn’t always mean an excellent standard of accommodation but we think the Marialena houses come quite close. Manolis and Sophia, the owners, have put every care and attention into the building of these comfortable houses. As easy as it might have been to build a block of apartments Manolis and Sophia understood the importance of privacy, tranquillity and comfort and built five one bedroom houses and four two bedroom houses as well as two beautiful swimming pools.
Each house has a private covered patio, a double or twin bedroom (the two bedroom houses have both), a shower room and a spacious sitting room with an adjacent well-fitted kitchenette that has a mini oven, toaster and coffee machine. Air conditioning is fitted in all of the bedrooms. For larger parties there is both a sofa and a divan in each of the sitting rooms so up to 4 people can be accommodated in the one bedroom houses and up to 6 in the two bedroom houses.
The inviting swimming pools nestling amongst the beautiful gardens make Marialena a difficult place to leave but, if you like to feel the sand between your toes, less than a ten minute drive will bring you to the long sandy beach of Kalives, one of many picturesque coastal resorts situated close by.
There are two tavernas and a mini-market within a couple of minutes walk from Marialena, and Kalives offers further shopping and a wide choice of tavernas, many situated right next to the sea.
The Apokoronos, scattered with many pretty traditional villages, is a delight to explore and it’s easy to get ‘off the beaten track’ to really discover more of what this lovely region has to offer. Other delights easily reached from Marialena include the beautiful fresh water lake of Kournas, the archaeological side of Aptera, 14th & 15th century monasteries and the spectacular Venetian harbour town of Chania is only 20 minutes away by car.
