Situated at the foot of Mount Giouchtas, approximately 14 kms from
Heraklion and its coastal resorts, is the agricultural town of Archanes, one of
the most attractive 'living' villages in Crete. Neoclassical buildings painted in
warm colours, paved narrow lanes, ancient churches, traditional cafes and
tavernas combine with 'every day' life that continues in every corner. This
tastefully restored village has been developed with visible respect, and certainly
long term benefit, to its traditions. The friendly villagers are proud of their
successful efforts and understandably so, the village has won two awards; 2nd
best restored village in Europe and 1st in long term development prospects.
The narrow streets of the old town and the Minoan, Byzantine and Folklore
museums uncover much of the local history but the greater area of Archanes is
also highly significant in the history books. Anemospilia, thought to have been
a Minoan temple, is situated approximately 2kms north of Archanes. Fourni, a
large Minoan cemetery on the edge of the village provides evidence of the size
of the Minoan community that once thrived here.Vathypetro is equally worth
visiting, both for its Minoan finds and its magnificent views of the beautiful
vineyards of this famous wine-growing area. And Knossos, Crete's most well
known Minoan palace is only 11kms away at Heraklion.
Located on a quiet street our accommodation here reflects the true atmosphere
of this lovely village. Built in 1893, Arhontiko is a fine example of 19th century
inland Cretan architecture. It has been restored throughout with care and respect
to its original architectural elements. All of the interiors are fitted with antiques,
old embroideries and handmade furniture. The beautiful enclosed yard is
decorated with stones that are hand-carved by the very stone-builders that raised
the house.
The four apartments are maisonette style with a bedroom and bathroom
downstairs, and a spacious living area and simple kitchen facilities upstairs.
There is also air-conditioning, satellite TV, and a music system. You can enjoy
your coffee, tsikoudia or breakfast in the courtyard and in the evening try
traditional Cretan fare and the renowned Archanes wines in one of the many
tavernas situated close by. Arhontiko makes a great base for discovering real
Cretan life, history, archaeology and for enjoying its beautiful nature. |
