| Palekastro is situated in the eastern corner of Crete. The region is locally known as 'hidden Crete' because it has some of the most unspoilt landscapes on the island; wild rugged mountains, dramatic craggy coast lines, beautiful natural beaches, acres of olive groves and a profusion of traditional villages virtually untouched by the 'hand of time'.
We wanted our accommodation here to reflect the unspoilt beauty of this place and we think the Amalia Apartments do just that. They are perched on a hill just outside the village and have one of the best positions in Palekastro. Magnificent views sweep across green hillsides dotted with olive groves to the wide blue bay of Kouremenos, one of several tranquil beaches found in the region. The four maisonettes, built by a local couple, George and Amalia, make comfortable and relaxing accommodation for exploring this peaceful lovely place. The maisonettes have a double bed in the sleeping area upstairs and a combined kitchen/living room downstairs, with a sofa bed to sleep an extra person if required. The shower room is also on the lower level. A balcony leads from the bedroom and there is a terrace on the ground level, both perfect for enjoying the exceptional views. Less than five minutes away by car (included in the cost of the holiday), you can find most facilities you might need during your stay - fresh bread from the bakery, Cretan sweets from the patisserie, mini markets, a tourist office, cafes and some excellent tavernas. The village tavernas offer typical Cretan fare as well as regional dishes and there’s a choice of beachside tavernas that specialise in fresh fish. If you occasionally want a little more life the harbour town of Sitia, the capital of the area, twenty minutes away by car, comes alive in the evening with locals and visitors alike enjoying the promenade and the waterside tavernas. If you can drag yourselves away from the beauty right on your doorstep Palekastro makes an excellent base for exploring the many wonders of 'hidden' Crete. The palm forest of Vai, the monastery of Toplou, the Minoan palace of Zakros, the archaeological site at Itanos, the museums, fort and markets of Sitia and the dramatic beach and brilliant blue water of Xerokampos can all be reached from Amalia. |
